Mark Van Ziegler is a bassist experienced throughout the spectrum of modern music: from improvised music to contemporary classical and original rock. He has over a decade of professional experience with performances in 19 countries on 5 continents and 45 states in the U.S. When he's in New York City - his home when off the road since 2011 - he keeps busy with a varied freelance schedule of jazz, rock, orchestral and musical theater performances.
He began studying bass as a teenager in Ohio and was fortunate to find a great first teacher in Kevin Switalski, of the Cleveland Orchestra. He holds an undergraduate degree (graduating with honors) from Western Michigan University, where he studied with Tom Knific, and a graduate diploma from the Peabody Institute, where he had two great mentors: Michael Formanek and Paul Johnson. In 2005, Mark was the first-ever jazz major awarded Peabody's Olga von Hartz Owens Memorial Prize for Strings. As a student, Mark was honored to learn from and perform with guests artists Danilo Perez, Sam Rivers, Leon Fleisher, Bob Brookmeyer, Bobby McFerrin and Billy Hart.
Mark has performed with a growing list of fine New York musicians and bands including Gato Loco de Bajo, Coconino, Jeff Hirschfield, Aaron Irwin, Danny Fox, Rob Cookman, Raquel Chavez, Olli Soikkeli, Mauricio Zottarelli, Jeff Davis, Logan Thomas, Taylor Faith, Austin Moorhead, Leslie Carrara Rudolph, Daniel Pearson, Ryan O'Neil, Mark Stuart Dance Theater, Micah Burgess, the Scott Anderson group, Michael Avedon, New York Holiday Choristers & Men Singing Carols. Having spent time in Baltimore, he has performed with Gary Thomas, Jacob Yoffee, Russell Kirk, Jon Birkholz, Devon Gray and Tim Murphy. Mark also shared the stage with contemporary double bass master Robert Black; NBC's 'The Voice' contestant Todd Kessler; and many Chicago musicians and bands, including Jeb Bishop, Tim Daisy, Jim Baker, Dan Effland, Salamander, Lacona, Derek Fawcett, Caroline Davis, Tim Mulvenna, and Daniel Thatcher.
He has recorded with Butterfat Trio, John Benthal, Tony Trischka, Micah Burgess, Todd Kessler, the Dan Effland Group, Lacona, Bob Wallis, Salamander, Jacob Yoffee, and his tongue-in-cheeck LOST tribute band “You All Everybody”.
